Recovering a Cisco Router Password

Procedures for password recovery vary greatly from one Cisco device to another. Here i would be demonstrating how to recover a lost/forgotten password from a Cisco router using the console port.

These steps have been tested with Cisco 2621XM and 38xx series routers.
Directly connect your PC to the router console port. Run HyperTerminal and on your machine and power-up the router.
Within 60 seconds of the router power-up, press Ctrl/Break on the PC.
You will receive the following prompt.

 

Rommon>

Enter confreg:

Rommon> confreg

You will go through following dialog:

Do you wish to change the configuration? Answer Y
Answer N to all the subsequent questions until you reach:
Ignore system config info?
Answer Y
Again Answer N to all the subsequent questions until you reach:
Change boot characteristics?
Answer Y
enter to boot:
0= ROM  Monitor
1=the boot helper image
2-15=boot system [2]:
Answer 2 to boot.

Answer N to do you wish to change configuration.
Enter reset at the Rommon> prompt.
After the router boots, answer No to:

Would you like to enter the initial config dialog?

Enter the enable command. Then enter erase startup and confirm the deletion.

From enable mode, move to global configuration mode by entering config t.
Set the configuration register back to its default value with the command.
